Can you hook up a guitar amp head with a 8 ohm output to a speaker cabinet that works on 16 ohms?
I bought a Marshall AVT 150h amp head. The speaker output says 8 ohms. I was wondering if this head would work with a Behringer BG412H speaker cabinet with an impedance of 16 ohms. If I hook them up will I destroy my amp? Here's how it works . The 8-OHM printed on the back of the MARSHALL AMP means , YOU CAN USE A SPEAKER OF 8-OHMS OR HIGHER. however , you can't use speakers with ohms less than 8-OHMS . Since 16 is more than 8 , you can use the speaker cabinet in question . If you would use speakers with less than 8 OHMs, it becomes " MORE OF A SHORT CIRCUIT" and you will blow out the Marshall. O K ? GOT THAT ? But now there's more....if youi hook up more than one speaker cabinet, the ohms drop, or in other words, 2 (16 ohm )cabinets will then drop down to 8 ohms, still a safe number. . It can be used. But you shouild go to a music store or talk to a TV repairman so that he can explain "series" & "parallel" hooking to you,. He can explain it to you, or just get a book on electronics at the mall . One more thing , the closer you drop down to 8 ohms (from 16 ), the louder your amp will be. In other words, your amp will have more output if the speaker cabinet that you have would be 8 ohms . Also, maybe the speakers inside are 4 or 8 ohm speakers ( YOU SAY THE NUMBER IS 412, meaning there are 4 speakers inside) so, you see, "Series & parallel are important. Have a friend check the speaker cabinet by unplugging it from the MARSHALL, then using a guitar cord plugged into the back of the speaker cabinet, use an OHM METER by touching the tip of the other end of the cable with one tester wire and touching the side of the plug with the other tester wire . tjdrum7 | Read more Will a guitar amp head that outputs 16 ohms work with an 8 ohm cabinet? http://www.guitarcenter.com/Vox-AC4TVH-4W-Tube-Guitar-Amp-Head-620389-i1453130.gc Is it safe to connect this head to an 8 ohm cabinet? theres no switch. Hello! This particular amplifier head is designed to be coupled to a 16-Ohm speaker load, despite whether it is in the 4, 1, or ¼-Watt output mode. You will definitely damage the unit if you connect it to an 8-Ohm cabinet! If your speaker cabinet has two 8-Ohm speakers, re-wire them in series to present a 16-Ohm load to the amplifier. See http://www.prestonelectronics.com/audio/Impedance.htm for a more details regarding the importance of matching impedances. I want to purchase this Marshall amp cabinet, and I want to know if I can use my current amp as a head, or preamp, because it has a speaker output. Marshall Cabinet: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Marshall-MG412A-or-MG412B-120W-4x12-Guitar-Extension-Cabinet-101644409-i1145923.gc My current Crate Amp (Discontinued): http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Crate-GTD15R-Guitar-Amplifier-with-Reverb-?sku=480061&src=3WWRWXGB&ZYXSEM=0 I do no plan on buying BOTH of the cabinets, only one. I found that kind of confusing as well that the guitar center page had a photo of both when the page was for Angled OR Straight. And the speaker output eliminates the flow to the Crate amp and only projects it out to the cabinet, so I'm not mixing sounds from Marshall and Crate. The point is to get it louder. I intend to buy the Marshall Head as well when I get enough money. You can do it, but I highly recommend you don't. Your crate doesn't have near enough watts to properly push a full Marshall stack, or even a half-stack. That can be very bad for the speakers. Without an amp that has the proper amount of electricity going to the speakers, you can do great damage to the speakers internally. Trying to push 2 120 watt speakers with a 15 watt head can cause permanent harm to a brand new cab. I don't recommend you do it.
