Half stack guitar Amp Help?
Hey guys I am currently using a Line 6 Spider 3 (75HD) head to a Really nice Randall Cab(can't think of the model) I have recently used just a really cheap regular guitar cable connecting the head and the cab and it seemed to be fine... But it seems when i play live that it usually starts getting really distorted like it is bogging down when i turn it half way up but i know its not the speakers in the Cab... I just bought a expensive heavy duty 3 foot Live wire (Head to cab) speaker Cable at guitar center... Do you think that this will improve the sound going into the Cab? Any advice will help : )

Yeah, you ALWAYS want to use a heavy duty speaker cable to connect an amp to a speaker. That cable is probably the nicest piece of equipment you own... lol. The Randall cab is ok too, I think. Anyways, when you turn a solid state, or modeling amp past half way, you might experience distortion or a muddier sound. It's just the nature of those amps. You'll start to experience breakup really early, and lose tone. That's why they never want you to turn the amp up full blast in the store, because they know the sound starts to deteriorate at higher volumes. It's also why you'll see 300 watt guitar amps now. They have more headroom for bass response, but also allow you to turn you to get a louder sound, without having to turn it up all the way. It's the opposite of a tube amp, that needs to have the volume up past 8 to saturate the power tubes and drive the amp. I forget all the reasons why this stuff happens. You can check your speakers to see if they have pulled away and are blown.

Can I modify my 2-channel guitar amp so that only one of the channels is effected by the effects loop?
Here is what I have: I have a fender FM-100H head and 4x12 cabinet along with it. The amp has a clean channel and also a drive channel and a footswitch to switch between these channels. I usually run a few pedals whether I am in the drive channel or not and do so either in front of my amp or in the effects loop. Either way those effects pedals modify the sound whether I am in the clean or drive channel of the amp. However, most of the time I am not using only one effect pedal, so say I have a distortion, flanger and a delay on while I am in the clean channel and then I switch over to the drive channel, now I still have all those same effects and the drive, so if I just want to get to the unaffected sound of that drive channel I have to switch channels and turn off each of the 3 pedals, and it is hard to hit 4 footswitches at once while keeping one foot on the ground to stand while playing live. I realize I could get an a-b switch and put one way through my effects chain, but what I would like is to be able to modify my amp so that the drive channel does not pass through the effects loop, so if I leave on all my pedals hooked up through the loop and just press the single pedal for the amp to go into the drive channel I am only getting the drive. So is there anyway to re-wire the amp so the drive channel goes straight to the sound as it does when nothing is plugged into the effects loop, or better yet can I add a switch in the wiring to let it be affected by the effects loop or not at my choice. I mean obviously this is possible, but is it less than having to re-wire the whole way the amp is set up.

The short answer is basically no, not without major rewiring. Since the channel switch happens shortly after input, and the fx loop is usually the last thing in the preamp before the power amp, you would have to use some pretty complex switching to be able to do this.... it's not as simple as just adding a DPDT switch or anything - the impedance coming out of an fx loop is going to be different than the impedance coming out of the preamp, and it would require adding additional circuitry to the non-fx channel (drive channel, right?) to make the impedances match. No impedance matching means volume and tonal differences between the two channels, and not in a favorable manner, either. I'm not an amp builder or anything, but I am a hobbyist DIY pedal builder, and I hate to tell you this, but unless you engineer an amp to have this capability it is extremely difficult to add it in - you have to have the schematics, you need to know how to design the appropriate circuit for that amp specifically, and of course the soldering and electrical skills to make it happen. I have a Mesa that has this capability, but it involves a lot of circuitry that a normal amp would not have. It does this in part by manipulating a parallel fx loop, something which is a PiTA all by itself. Saul

Is there a way to use a blue-tooth for my guitar amp?
I like to think I'm at least decent at playing, so I'm just starting to get more technical with certain things. I recently played on a stage and I played like I always do, but I went over to the other side of the stage for a minute and because my amp was on the other side, I couldn't hear anything I was playing. I had to rely on my memory of the song and tune out everything ahaha. So I was wondering is there a way to wire a blue tooth-like thing to my amp so I can hear what I'm doing not only from my amp but from the head set thing. I'm sure it's possible I just don't know how to go about doing this. Thanks for any mature answers. Ok, how?

The problem with Blue-Tooth is that it's not a very robust signal link. The range is only 20-30 feet line of site. A stage environment is just too harsh to try to use that. In-ear monitor systems work in the UHF or microwave bands, and are much less susceptible to interference. But, you'll pay at bare minimum $400 for anything worthwhile, and another $100 to $200 for decent in-ear earphones. The system I'm using currently set me back $1200 for the transmitter/receiver and another $650 for the earphones. If you're going to wander around the stage, could you put a second cabinet on the side opposite from where you normally stand? Will your amp support a second cabinet? Otherwise, just don't wander too far away from your amp. Good luck. Greetings from Austin, TX Ken
